If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, stop smoking, sleep more, reduce clutter, or do better at something, then you know how challenging it can be to stay on track with your goals.
It’s one thing to say I’m going to lose 10 pounds this month, It’s quite another thing to actually do it.
There are so many distractions that derail our best plans.
The birthday party where I’ll just have one small slice of birthday cake.
The office co-worker who was supposed to hold you accountable so you both stop smoking decides she can’t take another minute without her smoke break and pulls your right along with her. Well, I’ll just smoke one so she doesn’t feel bad about herself. I can stop anytime but I don’t want to lose my friend and our daily chats.
The long work day and your favorite movie just happens to be on so I’ll just watch for a few minutes. The laundry you were going to do doesn’t get done or the dishes in the sink don’t get washed until after the movie and now you missed going to bed at a decent hour, So much for going to bed early and waking up feeling refreshed instead of dragging yourself out of bed grumbling.
The family that has toys all over the floor and a stack of mail on the kitchen counter along with the kids’ homework, school papers, a flyer for the bake sale, and an invitation to your friend’s baby shower. This house is such a mess! How does it get like this? I’m overwhelmed and if I move anything I might forget to help the kids’ with their homework, sign-up to bring cookies, or send my friend a baby gift. And the toys? If I put them away, the kids will just make a mess again.
If these scenarios sound familiar, then you are not alone.
I’m right there with you!
Most of us live pretty busy lives. We don’t realize how much we get off our diet until our pants start fitting a little too snug. We don’t realize how that one cigarette turned into a pack-a-day until our wallet starts feeling it. We don’t realize how messy our house is until someone texts they will be right over to drop off that thing they borrowed the other day.
So, how do we break the habit of continuously breaking the habits we want to create?
